Byeongjin Wins Best Student Award for Smart Lighting System

Byeongjin Kim (김병진) presented his recent work on automated lighting for home appliances at the 2025 Asia Lighting Conference (ALC) in Chongqing, where he received the Best Student Award. Titled “Context-Aware Automated Lighting System for Winecellars and Home Appliances,” the study introduces a smart rule-based lighting system that adapts to user context and surrounding conditions, moving beyond conventional brightness control.

Using a wine cellar as the testbed, the research conducted a workshop with eight designers and derived 38 lighting scenarios. The system dynamically adjusts its lighting through illuminance, sound, and user proximity, while also allowing personalized presets such as shelf highlighting for selected wines. With a high SUS score (90.00), the system was shown to enhance usability, aesthetics, and premium product value, demonstrating the potential of context-aware lighting across diverse home appliances.
